One of the most underrated ways to dress up a home is with a new chandelier light. Chandeliers provide not just needed illumination in any room, but can dramatically alter the appearance and feel of that room. Chandelier lighting can make a room feel cozy, polished and finished, or when done wrong, can make that same room feel cheap, rushed and cold. Lights for the home are generally something that comes at the end of any project, whether that’s new construction or a remodel, so they tend to be put off until last minute. This is a big mistake! Make sure to plan the entire project with lighting in mind. If you’ve hired an Interior designer for help, they will definitely be able to steer you in the right direction when it comes to lighting and chandelier selection.
There are many shapes, sizes and styles of chandeliers on the market today. Some of the most popular include orb shape, star burst, contemporary, modern, industrial and vintage styles. One of the most popular trends right now is the modern farmhouse style. Popularized by certain designers on television and social media, this style has become a fan favorite. This style is represented by clean lines, simple designs and a mix of colors. Some of the colors being Black, Wrought Iron, white or washed white, and softer metal tones like antique gold or aged brass.
Sizing a chandelier is simpler than you think, and we are here to help if you get stuck. One of the most common question we get is “What size chandelier should I use for my dining room table?”. Tables are actually the easiest to size for. When selecting a chandelier for a table use this easy guide. First, the width of the chandelier should be no bigger than 12” less than the width of the table. For example, if your table is 42” wide, the chandelier should not be more than 30” wide. As far as chandelier height goes, well that’s a little more of a judgement call. If your ceiling height is only 8’, then you need to be careful about how tall the chandelier is. The bottom of a chandelier should hang between 30” to 36” off the surface of the table. Using that guide, you can then determine how tall of a chandelier you can actually use. We also tell clients to trust their judgement, if it looks good to you, then it probably is.
